Theatre Peckham
Since April 2007, STEP has been hosted by one of its partner organisations, Theatre Peckham. Prior to this move STEP was hosted by the Southwark Culture Service in Southwark Council. Theatre Peckham has been heavily involved with the development of STEP since its inception in 2003 and provided invaluable support to STEP as it became an independent arts organisation and took on its new Creative Director in November 2007.
Over the last three years, STEP and Theatre Peckham have developed an extensive partnership, sharing knowledge and expertise and supporting each other’s programmes of work with young people in Southwark. Theatre Peckham also hosts many STEP events at its Havil Street theatre, and is a major contributor to many of STEP’s programmes of work such as the Diploma in Creative and Media.
Teresa Early, Artistic Director of Theatre Peckham says: STEP creates brilliant and unique opportunities for Southwark performing arts students to partner with real live theatre companies. Results? Fantastic!
Theatre Peckham was founded by Teresa Early on the North Peckham Estate in 1985, and has been working continuously ever since to help children and young people to discover the magic of theatre, to develop their potential as performers and creative professionals, and to raise both their confidence and aspirations. Theatre Peckham offers an extensive programme of performing arts workshops from Baby Singing to the BTEC National in Performing Arts and theatre productions created specifically for local school and family audiences, which enable young people to work alongside professional actors and creative teams. Partnerships with local schools include a range of educational and creative programmes. Their workshop programme culminates with two or three large-scale professional productions every year, which present high quality, accessible, exciting shows which reflect the diversity of the area and challenge perceptions of both Peckham and its young people. Supported by both the Arts Council of England and Southwark Council, Theatre Peckham have 25 years of experience in enhancing the lives of inner city children.
